Serving our parish

Picture

As Christians, we are called to give our selves, time, talent and treasure for the building of the Kingdom of God.

Plus, we just feel better when we are involved in a ministry of the Church.  It’s a great way to get to know other people and feel more connected.
So, please: jump right in!
Get involved!

Ministries listed in red especially need your help at this time.

Serve on Sundays

Acolytes:
Acolytes light the altar candles and may carry the cross or torch (large candle stick) down the aisle (mostly at the 9:30 service) and often read scripture, if interested. Contact: The Rev. Preston Lentz

Altar Guild: This guild prepares form Communion and all services the church offers: baptism, weddings, funerals, foot washing at Easter. We welcome new members! Contact the office.

Bread Bakers: The ministry of the bread bakers is to prepare the communion bread for the Sunday services. Each bread baker typically prepares the communion bread once a month. There is at least one recipe on our St. Christopher’s website, and you may find other communion bread recipes in other places on the web, or perhaps you have one of your own. Contact: Marilyn Smith  (Currently on hiatus due to the pandemic.)

Flower Guild: The flower guild prepares the flowers for each Sunday, and for Christmas and Easter. Each person prepares flowers about once a month and all help during the special holidays. Contact: Paula Sterling

Choir: The St. Christopher’s Choir sings at the 9:30 services from September to May and also at the special Christmas and Easter services and other special occasions. If you would like to sing, the choir would love to have you. They rehearse on Sunday mornings at 8:30 a.m., and then again after the service, from about 10:45 to 11:30 am. Contact the Director of Music: Ina Young or just show up!

Handbell/Chime choir: Performs at the 9:30 service on select Sundays.  Contact the Director of Music Ina Young for more information.

Ushers: Ushers turn on the sound system and fans or air conditioners before the service; they hand out bulletins, give lei to visitors, take up the offering and usher people to the altar rail to take communion. They also tidy up the church after the service.

Greeters assist with all of this, making sure that all visitors feel welcome. Ushers also help give directions, and notify Sunday school classes about when to come to the sanctuary to share communion with us. Contact: Parish Administrator for 9:30 service or Fred Smith for 7:15 service

Eucharistic Ministers, Lectors, Intercessors: Eucharistic Ministers serve the blessed elements (usually the wine in the chalice) to the people gathered around the altar. They also read Scripture and lead the Prayers of the People. At the 7:15 am service, there is one Eucharistic Minister, who is the lector and intercessor. At the 9:30 service, there are typically two Eucharistic Ministers, one serving as Lector and the other as the Intercessor, leading prayer. Contact: Rector

Eucharistic Visitors: Eucharistic Visitors are trained to take communion to the sick and shut-ins. There is some formal training involved. This is an extremely rewarding ministry and very much appreciated. Contact: Rector

Counters: Counters are another key Sunday volunteer group. Counters work in groups of two, each group serving once a month. They tally donations received on Sundays and the preceding week. Contact: Linda Bruckner.

Nursery care: St. Christopher’s nursery is for children 3 1⁄2 years old and younger. We have a nursery staff of three who work in rotations of two a Sunday. We provide childcare from 8:30 to 11:00 am on Sundays and often during special season services as well.  Contact: Parish Administrator

Informal Sunday School for 3 1⁄2 and above (8:30-9:30): Miss Fran (Dillinger) is here by 8:30 to offer informal Sunday School from 8:30 to 9:30, for children of choir members and parents who arrive on campus for adult classes, etc.  Informal Sunday school continues for children 3 1/2-6 years of age in room 102 during the second service.  Contact: Parish Administrator

Sunday school: Godly Play for Grades 1-6: This class, which meets from September through June, is also a Montessori-style program, and also joins us for communion at the 9:30 service in the Church.  Contact: Tom King

Healing Prayer: On the fourth Sunday of each month, following Communion, we have healing prayer in the Prayer Chapel. We truly believe prayer makes a difference. Contact: Mary Ann Knerr or Maryalice Woody

Fellowship Hour: One of the most important ministries one can provide is the hospitality of food, especially when we have guests and relative newcomers. It gives us a way to welcome folks, invite them to the parish hall and have an opportunity to chat with them. Can you provide snacks for coffee hour one Sunday a month, or one Sunday every two months? That would help bless our parish so very much! Contact: Parish Administrator or sign up in the Parish Hall.  (Currently on hiatus due to the pandemic.)

Serve during the week

Prayer Team/Prayer Power: Prayer Team/Prayer Power ministers hold no meetings; each offers prayers on his or her own schedule, maintaining the confidentiality of all prayer requests. This is a group of ministers who really know first-hand the power of prayer! Contact: Maryalice Woody

Congregational Care Team: This team helps with people who may have short- term needs such as provision of a meal or transportation to a doctor’s appointment.  Contact: Rector

Youth Group: This year we have about seven youth. We gather at church and off campus for conversation and meals, and go to movies or other events. The youth also do some service projects together. Our youth are invited to any of our adult formation programs, and invited to volunteer in our children’s formation program. If you or a member of your family would like to be involved, please contact: Rev. Preston Lentz

House & Grounds: Do you have a hidden talent, like painting, woodworking, planting and maintaining a flower garden? Our sexton and volunteer grounds people do a lot of our work, but we do need all kinds of talents on work days (even just extra hands). We welcome new “regulars” as well as occasional volunteers. Contact: Senior Warden Lisa DeLong.

Leadership: As with all Episcopal Churches, we are led by a vestry. The vestry includes the Rector, a Senior Warden (chosen by the Rector), a Junior Warden, and nine other at-large vestry members elected by the Church, who each serve for three years. Each year the nominations committee presents a slate for members to vote on at the Annual Meeting, which is the last Sunday in January. If you are a member in good standing (attend regularly, pledge, and support the life of the church), and would like to run for a leadership position, talk to a vestry member, a member of the Nominations Committee (announced each fall), or the Rector.

One time service opportunities

Family Camp: Usually around the first weekend in May, we have a three-day weekend Family Camp up at Camp Mokuleia. There is plenty of time for swimming, snorkeling, turtle-watching, eating s'mores and singing at the campfire, playing a softball game for all ages, playing Frisbee golf, and just hanging out. There is a morning Eucharist on Sunday. Contact: Tom King

Beach Eucharist and Picnic:  One Sunday near Labor Day weekend, we have our 9:30 service at Kailua Beach Park, followed by a "Chill-n-Grill" type picnic.  Hot dogs and hamburgers are provided by the vestry and the rest is potluck.  It is lots of fun and a great opportunity to get to know parishioners in a casual setting.  Contact:

In addition to the needs of our parish family, we serve our community in outreach ministry.
